Bottle Drive

The Bow Valley SPCA will be collecting containers which can be recycled at the Bottle Depot from selected neighbourhoods in Canmore on September 11--the weekend after Labour Day.

We will be distributing "door hangers"  in the neighbourhoods we intend to collect from on August 30.

If you receive a notice on August 30, please tell your friends and neighbours to remember to put out their recyclable materials for collection on the 11th.

If you neighbourhood is not selected (we only have a limited amount of person power to do the collection), individuals can drop off their containers at the Bottle Depot and designate the Bow Valley SPCA as the organization they wish to donate the funds to.

Come Fido Come! Recall Clinic

No pre-requisite. A two-session clinic for anyone who needs tools to help improve their dog's ability to come when called. The first half hour will be an orientation with tips, ideas and effective recall strategies. The remaining two hours will be hands-on work with your dog to put those strategies to work.

The recall clinic will focus entirely on this one life-saving skill: We'll play name attention games, practise lots of recalls, you'll be introduced to how to teach a whistle recall (whistles will be available for sale if you don't already have one), and we will run the dogs in fun recall races. Class fee includes handout with helpful tips and written instructions. Class open to any dog- and people- friendly dog (puppies must be fully vaccinated to enroll).

This clinic is held over two sessions: Sundays starting September 12 and continuing on September 19 from 11:00 AM  to 12:30 PM.

Cost: Regular fee $85.00, dogs adopted from the BVSPCA $75.00

Download the registration form(Word Doc).

Registration is required and class size is limited to eight dogs.   Minimum class size is 5 dogs. If three days prior to start date the minimum registration requirement has not been met, the registered participants will be notified and given one of two options: a) the registered dog/handler team will be given the option to take part in the next available class, starting at a later date, and when the minimum registration requirement for that class has been met. b) the full registration fee will be reimbursed and the registration will be withdrawn.  Registration forms are also available at the Carla Cumming Sojonky Adoption Centre.

Open Paws Training Levels 3 & 4

Training for Open Paws Levels 3 and 4 are required to complete the Open Paws training program.  Satisfactory completion means that a volunteer may work with most of the dogs and cats at the centre.

Even for people who have had dogs or cats as pets for years, this training is valuable because it provides insights in the proper ways to manage pets.

To attend a training session, please RSVP to Wanda Bogdane with the date and training level(s) of interest.
