Jade is enthusiastic, full of love to give, and has an ever-wagging tail and never-ending smile - but sadly, Jade has been living in pain for most of her life. Jade came into our care after the Canada Task Force reached out with a desperate plea for help. Upon seeing her sweet face, we knew that we had to step up to give her a chance. Now, Jade needs a complex back leg amputation to address an old injury that has caused a myriad of debilitating and painful problems.
After arriving to us, we quickly noticed that Jade had a bunny-hop gait, and she would yelp when stepping on her back right leg. She would sit with that leg sticking out at an odd angle, and it seemed to flop around unnaturally. It was visually obvious that there was muscle atrophy in that leg, and she was clearly in pain.

When Jade went in for her spay, along with a dental surgery to extract painful teeth that had been fractured, x-rays of her leg revealed many abnormalities hiding beneath the surface. The imaging showed an old fracture on the growth plate of her leg, causing her right leg to be significantly shorter than the left. Because of the discrepancy in leg lengths, more secondary problems arose; hip dysplasia causing painful arthritis in her hip joint, and a hypermobile hock (akin to a human ankle) which was at risk of severe, irreparable damage. To have impacted bone growth in this way, it is likely that this injury occurred when she was 4-6 months old or younger. She is now a 2 year old dog. This means that Jade has lived with chronic pain for most of her life.
Because of the complexity of her condition, Jade's vet in Canmore sent a referral to a surgery specialist at the CARE Centre in Calgary. Upon examination and consultation with the specialist, it was determined that amputation of the leg including the hip would be the best option to ensure a life free from pain and future complications. While amputation is never a decision made lightly, in this case, knowing it is the best option to ensure a great quality of life for Jade filled with adventures, made it easier.

So far for routine care (vaccinations, deworming, exams), spay, dental surgery, and the specialist consult we have spent over $2,000 for Jade's medical care. Her leg amputation will be complex as it will include the hip joint and scar tissue, so it must be done by an orthopedic surgery specialist at the CARE Centre. The quote for the amputation and hospitalization is estimated to cost between $6,077 and $7,173.
Jade has captured the hearts of everyone that meets her with her optimistic attitude and loving and snuggly personality. She loves to run, bounce, and play, and we can't wait until she can do so freely! Jade has only known a life of pain, and it's time to change that. On July 10th 2025, she goes in for her amputation surgery. Jade needs YOUR help. Would you consider donating today to help fund this life changing surgery she so desperately needs?
