K-9 Summer Safety Tips

It's summertime in the Bow Valley! Warm weather is a great opportunity for dogs and people alike to get outside. Here are some tips for making it a safe and fun experience.
Cars
Many dogs like joining in a car trip, especially one that results in a hike. However, it is crucial to remember not leave your pet in a vehicle on a hot day even with windows down and vehicle in shade (shade may disappear quickly depending on time of day). In less than twenty minutes your pet could be overcome by Heat Stroke (inability to lower body temperature).
Ticks
Consult with your vet for medication for tick prevention and check your pet (as well as yourself) after your hike. Tickborne diseases, especially Lyme Disease are on the rise.
Surfaces
If there is a strong sun, the temperature of the pavement, trail or rocks can be much higher than you would expect. Hot surfaces can cause discomfort or harm to your pet's pads. A good rule of thumb is that if too hot for you to walk on barefoot, then it is too hot for your pet.
