WOOLgathering

My name is Carmen and I love fibre. Especially wool! I also have a passion for history, and a belief in living a sustainable life, supported by renewable resources. Wool is the ultimate renewable resource.
WOOLgathering is how I bring my love, my passion and my belief together.
Situated in a lovingly restored 1910 prairie farm house, WOOLgathering brings together all of these things - a renewable resource, processed in a sustainable manner and sited in an historic setting. Bliss!
My business started, literally, with 'three bags full' of raw sheep's fleece. I now process 500 lbs. of fresh-from-the-farm fleece each year.
The bulk of the wool is processed into stuffing for my hand-crafted Orthopedic Dog Beds. The raw wool is sorted, triple-washed, and then run through a hand built wool picker to open up the fibres and encourage any remaining debris to fall away.
This prepared wool is hand-stitched into a cotton muslin mattress. The mattress is then stitched with 'Comfort Tucks' which provide the cushioning and comfort that gives each bed its Orthopedic feature.
But it is the amazing qualities of wool that make these beds unique.
Wool is naturally insulating – Cool in summer and warm in winter. Wool is 100% natural – no off-gassing. Wool is 100% fire retardant. Wool deters pests and does not harbour fleas or mites. Wool is elastic – it does not compress easily. And wool is hygroscopic: As the humidity of the surrounding air rises and falls, the fibre absorbs and releases water vapour. Heat is generated and retained during the absorption phase, making wool a natural insulator.
The wool-filled mattress is then covered with a hand sewn, fully removable, machine washable 100% cotton canvas or denim cover. Together these elements create a luxurious 'lifetime' bed for a customer's beloved pet.
I carry an inventory of standard sized beds in a variety of cover colours and fabrics. I also create custom beds for those special pets that have unique needs.
