About Rex

Hi, I'm Rex, a big boy who is likely some sort of cross between a horse and a noodle, complete with impressive height, extraordinarily long legs, and a general lack of awareness about where those legs are at any given moment. Jokes aside, I'm a young shepherd mix who is loyal beyond measure, super fun and engaging, and a total snuggle monster once I get to know you. I've been making fast friends with the folks at the BVSPCA, and while it may take me a few minutes and a handful of hot dogs to decide you're trustworthy, especially if you're of the tall, broad, and deep-voiced variety of human, it doesn't take long before I'm trying to give you face kisses and rolling over for belly rubs.

As a young shepherd mix, I'm looking for a home that understands what comes with a big, intelligent, energetic dog and is excited to provide me with plenty of structure, consistency, and ongoing training. The staff and volunteers are working hard with me on keeping all four paws on the floor when greeting new friends, and I'm already starting to figure out that perhaps launching my entire wiggly body enthusiastically at the humans I love isn't considered particularly polite. My obedience is pretty fantastic though, and I've got excellent off leash recall! I'm used to living on an acreage, where leash manners weren't exactly an essential life skill, so I'm still figuring out this whole "person attached to the other end" concept. Because I'm such a large and powerful guy, my future family will need to be comfortable and physically capable of handling me while continuing to work on my leash skills and manners.

I'll do best with an active family who wants to include me in plenty of adventures and give me appropriate outlets for all my enthusiasm. A leisurely stroll around the block isn't going to cut it for this horse-noodle-shepherd. I'm looking for a home that can give me a good balance of physical exercise, enrichment, and ongoing training to keep both my big body and my equally big shepherd brain satisfied.

For someone who loves a big, goofy shepherd and is excited to help me become the best version of myself, I have all the makings of an incredibly loyal companion. My ridiculous antics are pretty much guaranteed to make you smile every day, and underneath all these legs is a very sweet dog with a whole lot of love to give. I've quickly become a staff and volunteer favourite, and it's hard not to be won over by my quirky charms. Get in touch to come meet me and see for yourself just how special I am!

Dog-friendly: I have some mixed feelings about other dogs, so I'll need continued training and thoughtful socialization around them. A single-dog household is recommended at this time, but we would consider an experienced multi-dog household willing to participate in several meet and greets to make sure everyone is comfortable.
Cat-friendly: I have lived around confident, dog-savvy outdoor cats and did well. I may be able to live with indoor cats with a careful and gradual introduction process.
Livestock friendly: I have lived around livestock separated by a fence and did well.
Kid-friendly: Yes, with dog-savvy kids, with some important considerations due to my size, strength, and enthusiastic approach to life.
Do I Need Special Care?: No
