About Gunner

Hey there, I'm Gunner, a Rottweiler/Irish Wolfhound Mix! If you're looking for a dog that's loving, loyal, and gentle, I might just be your guy! As a pup, I was in a bad situation, but some very kind folks took myself and my littermates under their wing, and got us back on the right track. Most of my littermates found homes, but I have been staying with the people that rescued me for quite some time now. During that time, I was mostly an outdoor dog, although I would come inside to spend time with the family. Because of my upbringing, I haven't had much exposure to the great big world outside their property, and so I arrived to the BVSPCA as a timid, nervous boy who was scared of everything. I may be a big dog weighing in just shy of 90 pounds, but I'm a bit of a baby! Despite finding myself in a new and scary environment, I tried really hard to be brave, and I'm learning that there are lots of kind people at the shelter for giving belly rubs, and we get to go on lots of nice walks and start exploring the world. Now, I'm a sociable and happy boy who is getting braver by the day! Because I've had quite a sheltered upbringing, my new home will still need to be patient and ready to encourage me with lots of positive reinforcement while I learn more about the world. Despite my size, I walk very nice on leash, have great recall, and am a gentle soul. Living outdoors I got used to protecting my property and my family from other dogs, so any introductions to new dogs will need to be slow and controlled while I learn I don't need to fight with other dogs anymore. I am okay with cats, but haven't had the opportunity to be around kids. I think kids that are noisy and high energy might be too much for me right now. I may have had some traumatic experiences with men as a puppy, so it takes me longer to warm up to men than it does women, and I still get spooked when people raise things above their head (like brooms or ski poles). With everything I've been through, I'm ready for a home that respects me, loves me, is patient with me, and is ready to show me all the great things that the world has to offer. In return, I'll be your best friend and loyal sidekick!
