About Kohen

My name is Kohen, and boy have I had a journey to where I'm at today! Now I'm finally READY to find a loving forever home to call my own! Unfortunately, my medical journey has not been an easy one. When I arrived to the BVSPCA, I was an emaciated version of the dog I once was, and had terrible skin symptoms. Over 6 months I underwent numerous tests, biopsies, diet trials, medications, and treatments to lessen my symptoms. After seeing little improvement, in November of 2024, I was referred to a Dermatology Specialist in Calgary. After much trial and error and nearly 8 months of healing, I became a healthy weight, and my skin-related symptoms are better controlled. YAY! The dermatologist determined that I have food and environmental allergies, which you can learn more about in the "Special Care" section of my bio below.

Despite all I've endured, I am the HAPPIEST dog and don't let any of my ailments keep me down! Snuggling and playing are my favorite pastimes, and I'll never pass up a (hypoallergenic) snack! I haven't met a person I don't immediately love. I'm very smart and eager to please, although I'll admit I've been more focused on trying to get healthy, so I'll need some reminding of my manners when I move back into a home. I am an extremely gentle and loving dog who will be loyal to the end to someone that takes a chance on me, and I promise to repay you with kisses and cuddles. I know I'll need a special family willing to take on my health challenges, but someday I hope to be a normal dog with a committed family to call my very own. I sure think I deserve it after all I've been through!

Dog-friendly: Untested
Cat-friendly: Untested, likely no due to high prey drive
Kid-friendly: Yes, dog-savvy kids recommended due to excitable nature, lived with kids in the past
Do I Need Special Care?: Yes. I have severe food and environmental allergies (pollens, grasses, molds, yeast, and more). At this time, I am on a daily oral allergy medication to control my itching, and I require weekly medicated baths, and daily paw wipes and ear drops. I am on a hypoallergenic diet to keep me feeling my best which I should stay on lifelong. I take a fibre/probiotic supplement with my food to improve my stool consistency. As of April 2025, I have also started weekly Immunotherapy Injections which aim to reduce the severity of my allergies and may be used as a long-term treatment option if I respond positively. Ongoing recheck appointments with my Dermatology Specialist in Calgary and routine follow up with a family veterinarian will ensure I continue to get the proper treatments as my allergies progress.
