pups

Everyone has puppies on the brain! We never have trouble adopting out a litter of puppies quickly. We are happy to announce that we have way more approved adopters than puppies and by the end of August all of our ladies will be going to their forever homes!

As predicted we have seen these puppies go from looking pretty identical (we used how many white toes were on each little paw to differentiate), to 7 individuals with obvious differences! We knew they were a mixed breed, but now we are seeing different characteristics of breeds showing up that we wouldn't have guessed by looking at mom! We are starting to see very obvious appearances of Rottweiler, Lab and Pit bull. It's always interesting receiving mom and puppies when you don't know who the father was! As they grow the changes start to give you clues. An interesting fact is that a litter of puppies can be made up from multiple fathers. If a female dog mates multiple times during her ovulation period different eggs can be fertilized by different males. This could explain why some litters have puppies that differ greatly in appearance, size and breed! All of our puppies will most likely be larger than mom, but their personalities and demeanor's are still reflections of her - calm, sweet and lovable with just the right amount of energy!

Right now our ladies are teething and their new favorite past time is nibbling on shoe laces, Birkenstock, toes and even latching onto a shin or calf if they can manage it! Their teeth are sharp, but they know how to keep their bites gentle. We've even started running them outside - this is the easy part! Leashes aren't needed, as our yard is fenced in and they love to run after mom or anyone else who comes out for the walk - they are great at staying in a pack! Tiring them out doesn't take long, and watching them try to scramble up big ledges or rocks and dig holes for the first time is super entertaining. Once they finish their outing our ACA's usually have been able to get a full clean done of their room and the pups go right to sleep instead of destroying all of the newly laid puppy pads! If you are taking on a new pup, lots of exercise never hurts!

Having these little girls has been a treat for everyone and we are so happy to announce that here at the SPCA we are about have another 7 happy endings!
